Question

why does ice float on water but sink in alcohol?

Open in App
Solution

Any thing which sink in a liquid must have higher density than that liquid.

The density of water 1.00 × 103 g/mL

The density of alcohol 0.806 × 103 g/mL

The density of ice is 0.92 g/mL

So order of density is alcohol< ice< water

On these facts we can say that the ice floats on water because its density is lesser than water while ice sinks into the alcohol because its density is higher than the density of alcohol
