Why does the melting point of ice decrease when salt is added to it?

Open in App
Solution

When salt is added to ice at low temperatures, its particles start interacting with the ice, and start dissolving in the ice, as a result, ice starts to melt, at lower temperatures. This is the reason why, salt is used to melt ice on roads in cold countries.
