Question

Why does the temperature in thermometer not rise till acetone is completely changed into vapours?

Open in App
Solution

During the vaporisation of acetone, the heat given to the system is used to break the bonds between the molecules. So, total heat is consumed to convert liquid acetone into acetone vapours and hence there is no rise in temperature of the system. This heat is called latent heat of vaporisation.
