Question

Why don't kerosene or alcohol break when dissolved in water?

Is sugar water a good conductor?

Open in App
Solution

Kerosene is a hydrocarbon and thus non-polar.Due to this it is not soluble in water which is polar. It’s density is less than water and thus it forms a layer over water.

Alcohol is a polar covalent compound which dissolves in water due to hydrogen bonding but doesnot break up because of its covalent nature.Ionic compounds ionize(break) in water.
