The large size of the earth lets us consider the planet to be a large source and sink of charge. So, there is no observable change on the surface charge density of the earth when we give positive charge or negative charge to the earth.
You might have read about lightning. In lightning large amount of charge is transferred between the cloud and the earth surface. Even after such large transfer of charge the ground is observed to be neutral. So, no effect on polarity of charge even when such large quantity of charge is given to earth.
