Question

why H2S is gas and H2O is liquid

Open in App
Solution

Hydrogen is capable of forming small bridges between atoms, especially if the atoms are electronegative. These bonds are called hydrogen bonds. We know that oxygen is more electronegative as compared to sulfur, therefore the hydrogen bonding in water is much more stronger than hydrogen bonding in hydrogen sulfide. Therefore water is liquid at room temperature whereas hydrogen sulfide is a gas.
