Question

why hydrogen was not given a fixed position in the periodic table

Open in App
Solution

Hydrogen was not given fixed position because:

  • The electronic configuration of hydrogen is 1s1alkali metals also have ns1 configuration of their outermost shell. Thus hydrogen resembles them in electronic configuration, but
  • hydrogen has similar chemical properties to that of halogens. This can be explained as halogens need 1 electron to have fully filled orbitals as do hydrogen.
