Why is a alpha particle called helium nucleus?

Open in App
Solution

Alpha particle is also called He nucleus because like He atom, it consists of 2 protons and 2 neutrons. However, it has no electron cloud, because of which it has an overall charge of +2. It is denoted by the symbol α and is written 2 4He2+ or He2+ as there are no electrons.

Hence it is similar to the He nucleus with 2 protons and 2 neutrons.
