why is glass or chinaware packed with straws?

Chinaware and glass are delicate substances and will break if it hit each other or fall. The straw in between the articles increases the time of experiencing the jerk during transportation at the same time it absorbs shocks. In this way it strike against each other with less force and are less likely to get damaged.
