Question

Why is graphite used as a lubricant in brake linings?

Open in App
Solution

Because Graphite is very soft and slippery. In Graphite the carbon atoms are situated at corners of the regular hexagonal ring. Such layers of hexagonal rings are arranged parallel to one another and the fourth valency of carbon is unsatisfied. This makes the layers to slide over one another. Hence, graphite is soft and slippery.
