Question

why is mettalic body of an electroscope earthed? what will happen to the leaves of an electroscope if a positively charged body is brought near (a) unchaged electroscope (b) positively charged electroscope (c) negatively charged electroscope.

Solution

If the metallic body of electroscope is earthed ,it measures potential in experiments. Without earthing the quantity measured by it is charge. This is related to potential difference by V=Q/C but is not same as the potential difference because there is a lot of variation in capacitance during an experiment.

a)When a positively charged body is brought near uncharged electroscope the leaves of electroscope will diverge.

b) When it is brought near a positively charged electroscope, the charge on the leaves becomes more positive and the leaves will diverge.

c) if a positively charged body is brought near to a negatively charged electroscope, the magnitude of charge on the leaves decreases and the leaves consequently move closer together
