Question

why is phenol insoluble in water?

Open in App
Solution

Dear student!

Phenol is a weak acid and so when it dissolves in water it releases a phenolate ion which further reacts with proton of water and makes the phenol. So, the phenol becomes moderately soluble. This little solubility is just because the phenol can form a hydrogen bond with water.

PhOH ⇔PhO- + H+
