Why is solute potential (Ψs) always negative and pressure potential (Ψp) always positive?

solute potential is negative because the presence of solute makes the solution to have less water than pure water would have had.

Pressure potential is usually positive in a living cell but can be negative also. Plant xylem vessel has negative pressure potential.
