Question

Why is the bond angle of H2 O greater than that of H2S?

Open in App
Solution

This is due to the fact that in the water molecule oxygen atom is present which is more electronegative than sulfur in H2S ( electronegativity decreases down the group) .As the electronegativity of the central atom decreases the lone pair of electrons lie further from it and therefore lp- lp repulsion decrease. Hence bond angle decrease. In water molecule where oxygen atom is more electronegative holds the lone pair of electrons on itself and therefore more lp-lp repulsion and more is the bond angle.
