Question

Why is the climate of antarctica cooler than that of the equatorial regions?

Open in App
Solution

The climate of Antarctica is cooler than that of the equatorial regions because Antarctica is located in the polar region where the sun's rays strike at a more grazing angle whereas in the equatorial regions the sun rays strike at a direct angle.

Moreover, Antarctica is covered with snow and ice all throughout the year. The ice surface is very reflective. Most of the sunlight hitting Antarctica is reflected right back out and very little radiation, or heat, is absorbed into the surface.
