Question

Why is the enthalpy of hydrogenation always negative

Open in App
Solution

Hydrogenation is the process if addition of hydrogen molecule into a hydrocarbon.

Hydrogenation involves the formation of new bond between C and H atoms. Formation of bond releases the energy in the form of heat which is called bond energy and hence the process is exothermic i.e. enthalpy change is negative.
