why lossing electrons is considered oxidation and gainning electrons as reduction??
When electron is lost the oxidation state of the species becomes more positive, i.e., it increases so it is called oxidation. While when electron is gained the oxidation state of the species becomes more negative, i.e., it decreases, therefore, it is called reduction.
