metal consists of magnetic dipoles which are oriented randomly . When a magnet is placed near a metal these magnetic dipoles get arranged because of interaction with the magnetic field of magnet in such a way that a net force is exerted on the metal and by newtons third law the metal exerts an equal and opposite force on the magnet
