Question

Why material medium is necessary for propagation of sound wave?

Open in App
Solution

Hi Viral!

Sound is produced by the vibration of objects. When objects vibrate, it collides with the molecules in the medium. This collision produces mechanical oscillations in the medium. Because of this, sound waves are known as mechanical waves. If there is no medium present, then the oscillations cannot propagate. So, for the propagation of a mechanical wave, a material medium is necessary.

Cheers!!
