Microorganisms act upon biodegradable substances to gain nutrition from them as a a result of their breakdown. They don't act upon non biodegradable substances because they do not gain any nutrition from them. Also, the simple biochemical reactions of the microorganisms are unable to breakdown the non biodegradable substances.
