Question

why organic compounds are generally soluble in non-polar solvents?

why organic compounds have low melting and boiling point?

Open in App
Solution

  • Small polar organic compounds such as methanol, ethanol, methanoic acid, ethanoic acid, mono or disaccharides will dissolve in polar solvents like water. Large organic molecules or non-polar organic molecules tend to be held together by dispersion forces so they dissolve in non-polar solvents like petroleum distillates or benzene.

  • Organic compounds have low melting point because, in the solid state the molecules of organic compounds are held by weak van der waal's forces of attraction. Thus, organic compounds in general have low melting point.
