Question

WHY OZONE DEPLETION IS MORE FREQUENT IN POLAR REGION?

Open in App
Solution

The extreme cold weather of polar regions results in formation of polar stratospheric clouds. These clouds provide surface area for chemical reactions to occur which leads to formation of reactive chemical compounds. These reactive compounds in spring lead to catalytic break down of ozone and hence depletion of ozone layer. Thus, ozone depletion is more frequent in polar regions.
