Question

Why Reducing Nature of hydrides is directly proportional to bond disassociation enthalpy ?

Open in App
Solution

Dear student!
Actually, in p-block, the bond dissociation enthalpy and basicity of non metallic hydrides decreases down the group because of larger size of atoms and unavailability of d-orbitals which affects the basic strength and makes the bond length larger so that it becomes easier to release electrons and so the bond dissociation energy decreases, and since the decrease in bond dissociation energy improves the release of electrons so the hydrides become more powerful reducing agent as the reduction means to donate electron and easier the donation higher is the reducing character.

So, here we see that, reducing character increases with decrease in bond dissociation energy and there is an inverse relation between them.
