Question

why ruther ford used only the alpha rays in gold foil experiment and what is a alpha particle?

Solution

At the time of gold foil experiment, alpha particles were known to be high speed, massive positively charged particles.Alpha particles were convenient microscopic projectiles. In order to support Thomsom’s plum pudding model of atom, Rutherford used alpha particles in the experiment since he expected the alpha particles to be deflected only very slightly by interactions with the low- mass electrons and with the low density “pudding” of positively charged matter in the gold atoms.

An alpha particle is He2+ ion.
