Question

Why sky appears blue during day and red during dusk or dawn? How is it related to scattering up of sun rays??

Solution

The color of the sky is blue during day and red during sunset because of our atmosphere.

At day time the sun rays are less slanting and are nearly vertical to a place. The white light from the sun is scattered by the atmosphere. Since, blue light has the shortest wavelength it is scattered the most. Thus the sky appears blue. However, the part of blue color that is not scattered along with the rest of the colors reach the earth as white light.

In the evening during sunset the rays are very slanting and they have to cover a longer distance through the atmosphere. As a result the scattering is the maximum. The blue part of light together with most of other colors are lost in the atmosphere due to scattering, only the red side of light reach the earth surface because longer wavelength of red lets it scatter the least. Hence, the sky appear red.
