Question

why sporophitic generation is dominant phase in pteridophytes?

Open in App
Solution

The sporophyte stage of fern is much bigger and longer lived than gametophyte. When we look for a fern plant, we are actually looking at the sporophyte of fern. The under portion of fern leaves bear fronds which produce spores by the process of meiosis. The gametophyte of fern is a very small structure. Thus, in pteridophytes like fern, sporophyte is much more dominant than gametophytes.
