Question

WHY THE DIPOLE-DIPOLE FORCE IS GREATER THAN LONDON FORCE AND SMALLER THAN DIPOLE INDUCE DIPOLE FORCE.

Open in App
Solution

Dipole-dipole interactions are the forces between molecules possessing permanent dipole. Ends of the dipole possess “partial charges” and these charges are shown by Greek letter δ. The magnitude of dipole-dipole forces is intermediate between London force and ion-dipole force. So, it can be represented as follows.

London force < Dipole-dipole force < Ion-ion force

London forces arise as a result of weak Van der Waal's forces which is weaker as compared to dipole-dipole interactions.
