Question

why the electric field lines due to charge of a conductor always normal to the surface??

Open in App
Solution

The charge on the surface of the conductor will not only contribute to the electric field inside the conductor it will also contribute to the electric field outside. The net effect of all the contributions to the electric field in the near vicinity of the conductor is to cause the electric field to be normal to (perpendicular to) the surface of the conductor at all points where it meets the sphere.
