Solution
Monsoon in India comes from two branches - the Bay of Bengal branch and the Arabian Sea branch.
The Arabian Sea branch of the monsoons causes heavy rainfall on the windward side of the Sahyadris and Western Coastal Plains.
After crossing the Western Ghats, they lose much of their moisture. On the other hand, the Bay of Bengal branch of the monsoons declines towards west and northwestern areas from the Orissa and Bengal coasts.
As such, when either of the branches of the Monsoons reaches the central parts of the country, they are left with lesser humidity and as such; these areas receive lesser rainfall than the rest of the country.
