Why was the first world war known as WORLD WAR

The First World War war was known as World War because there had been no such war before this war which brought widespread destruction and affected human lives in many countries.It had a serious political and economic impact all throughout the world.The devastation brought by this war was beyond imagination and could not be compared with any other wars except the Second World War.So there is enough justification to call the First World War as World War.
