Honey bees are bees of the genus Apis. Till date, seven species of honey bees has been found.
Four types of honey bees are there:
i. Micrapis- They are small honey bees found in south and southeast Asia. They build small, exposed nests in trees and shrubs.
ii. Megapis- They are large honey bees found in south and southeast Asia. They build exposed single comb or few combs in tree limbs, buildings, cliffs etc. They are very ferocious and often sting severely.
iii. Apis- Different species of Apis are found in eastern Asia, middle east, Africa, some part of Europe. They are most commonly used and managed by human for honey production. They are found in diverse climatic conditions.
iv. Africanised bees- They are hybrid of European and African bees and are very aggressive. They are also called as killer bees.
