There are many methods by which we can manage the garbage generated in a city. Most of the waste is generated from homes, offices, hospitals, schools etc. Collection and disposal of waste is the prime job of the municipality in a city. The easy method which the municipality can adopt for managing the garbage is by segregating the waste.
Waste is categorised into two types - biodegradable and non-biodegradable.
Biodegradable substances get broken down into simpler, harmless substances with due course of time by the biological process such as action of microbes and are recycled .Paper, wood, cloth, sewage, oil pollutants, cattle dung, domestic etc.
Non-biodegradable waste includes wastes such as plastic, metal, broken glass etc., cannot be broken down by living organisms.
It is the duty of the municipality to ask the people to segregate the waste at their homes, and each house should have separate bins for garbage collection, so that the collection and disposal of waste becomes easy. Waste can be segregated into two types: Dry waste and wet waste. All the kitchen waste, inorganic matter, vegetable peels etc have to be collected in one bin and all the dry waste such as metals, plastic, milk packets glass are to be collected in separate bin. The same should be handed over to the municipality garbage collectors. The waste then collected has to be disposed in a proper manner such as incineration which includes burning of waste. Biodegradable waste should be used to prepare compost. Some other waste materials are dumped underground and other materials like plastic are recycled.
