1) With the return of Mahatma Gandhi to India from South Africa, a new method of mass agitation by name, satyagraha was formed

2) Satyagraha was based on truth and without seeking vengeance, and purely through non – violence battle for freedom would be fought

3) Satyagraha movements were held in various places like Champaran in Bihar, Kheda in Gujarat, in Ahmedabad etc

4) Gandhiji launched satyagraha movement against Rowlatt Act in 1919 which gave the government powers to suppress political activities and detention of political prisoners was allowed without any trial

5) This non – violent civil disobedience movement started with hartal or strike on April

6) It caused spark to non cooperation movement, Khilafat movement which gradually led to economic fall in England

7) Foreign goods were boycotted and foreign clothes were burnt. The import of foreign goods were reduced in 1922 and many merchants refused to trade in foreign goods and even finance for foreign trade

8) All these movements made Indians to unite together towards freedom or Swaraj or full independence of India from the clutches of British

9) These movements caused a wave of horror among the British as they felt that their government would be disabled after viewing the unity brought about by Gandhiji through these non – violent movements
