Solution

1. Biomes - Biomes are the major ecosystems where several habitats of the ecosystem intersect. These are identified by the vegetation and organisms that populate them. The two major types of biomes are − land biomes and aquatic biomes. Land biomes on the Earth include tropical rain forests, grass lands, hot deserts, evergreen forests etc. whereas, aquatic biomes include fresh water ecosystem and marine water ecosystem.

2. Food web - Food web is the network of many food chains that are interlinked together and it forms a multitude of feeding connections among different organisms of a biotic community. The levels of food web cannot be calculated as one organism is eaten by many different organisms.

3. Energy Pyramid - Energy enters the ecosystem from the Sun. Plants utilize only 1% of the solar energy to carry out photosynthesis. When these plants are eaten by herbivores they obtain only 10% of the total plant energy; rest of the energy is released as heat into the environment. Similarly, carnivores receive only 10% of the total energy when they eat any of the herbivore and the rest is lost in the environment.

4. Biogeochemical cycles - The mechanism of constantly recycling the nutrients present in the environment between the biotic and the abiotic components of the Earth are called biogeochemical cycles. Some important biogeochemical cycles are:

• The water cycle

• The nitrogen cycle

• The carbon cycle

• The oxygen cycle
