1) Temperature: Thermometer is used to measure temperature. Invented by Galileo Galilee (1564–1642) this instrument has seen several changes since then including the use of mercury.
2) Pressure: Pressure gauge is used to measure pressure. The different between the two pressures, read on this instrument is called gauge pressure.
3) Humidity: A hygrometer measures the moisture content in the atmosphere. Johann Heinrich Lambert invented it in 1755. They are extensively used in greenhouses and industrial applications.
4) Precipitation: Rain gauges and snow gauges measure precipitation. Rain gauges categorized into recording and non-recording types.
5) Winds (Speed): Anemometer (also called) windmeter measures wind speed. First described by given by Leon Battista Alberti approximately in 1450, they are extensively used in weather stations.
6) Clouds: Ceilometer is device used in measuring the height of the base of the clouds.
7) Sunshine: Solar radiometer measures sunlight's intensity. Earlier simple mercury thermostats were used for the same purpose.
