When Zn reacts with NaOH solution it forms complex compound called sodium zincate : Na₂[Zn(OH)₄]. Sodium zincate is soluble in water.
The chemical equation is as follows:

Zn + 2H₂O + 2NaOH--->Na₂[Zn(OH)₄] + H ₂↑
