Ovaries of a female fetus contain 6 to 7 million egg cells during 16 or 20 weeks of pregnancy.
Most of them gradually degenerate, hence only 1 to 2 million eggs are present at birth and no new ones will develop after birth.
By the time of puberty, only 300,000 (more than enough for a lifetime of fertility) remain.
During ovulation only one or two egg cells get mature. The many thousands of eggs cells that do not mature and ovulate will eventually degenerate.
Degeneration occur more rapidly in the 10 to 15 years before menopause. All cells will be gone by menopause.
