Question

X and Y are isobars. X has mass number 14 and atomic number 6. Y has 7 neutrons. Predict the atomic number and mass number of Y.

Open in App
Solution

As elements X and Y are isobars so they must have same mass number but different atomic number.

Number of neutrons = mass number - atomic number
As the mass number of X is 14 so for element Y also the mass number would be same .
However as the number of neutrons for Y is 7 so it's atomic number = Mass number - number of neutrons
Hence for element Y :-
Mass number = 14
Atomic number = 7
Number of neutrons = 7
