Xylem transports water from the roots to the leaves when photosynthesis takes place. Phloem transports food material from the leaves to the different parts of a plant.

Xylem and phloem together make up the vascular bundle of a plant. The plants that do not have vascular bundles (like Bryophytes) possess some simpler tissues that are specialized for water transport.
