Xylem tissues are composed of dead cells called xylem vessels and tracheids. If they are "dead", how can they perform their function of transporting water and minerals upward throughout the concerned plant? Thank you! :)
Yes the majority of xylem tissue is dead and lignified. The main function of xylem is to build a pipeline like netwirk through which water can rise up. It needs to be strong and supported which is there because of lignin. Regarding water and minerals transport , that is brought about by osmotic pressure and transpiration pull generated due to transpiration. Xylem elements do not have to pump the water up.
