Question

you are provided with a container made up of aluminium. you are provided with a soluton of dl.hcl . ,dil hno3 ,zncl2,h2o.out of these solution which solution can be kept in al container. name the type of reaction

Solution

Aluminium reacts with oxygen in water forming thin layer of aluminium oxide and this layer prevents aluminium from further reaction. However, when water is kept in an aluminium vessel for long periods of time, some amount of aluminium oxide may dissolve in water. As aluminium ions are harmful, water should not be stored in aluminium vessels for long periods.

Aluminium is reacts with dil. HCl liberating H2 gas which is a highly exothermic reaction.

Aluminium under goes displacement reaction with zinc chloride forming aluminium chloride. Aluminium can displace Zn from zinc chloride solution.

Hence we cannot place dil HCl, ZnCl2, water in aluminium container.

But Nitric acid can be kept in aluminium container. Dil. HNO3 reacts with aluminium to form a very thin layer of aluminium oxide, which acts a protective coat and protects from further reaction of HNO3 with aluminium. Because of the protective oxide aluminium becomes passive and therefore HNO3 can be transported in aluminium container. This is an oxidation reaction. Nitric acid acts as oxidizing agent.

2Al + 6HNO3→ Al2O3 + 6NO2 + 3H2O
