Question

Zinc and hydrochloric acid react according to the reaction : Zn + 2HCl ---> ZnCl2 + H2 . If 0.30 mol of Zn is added to HCl containing 0.52 mol HCl, how many moles of H2 are produced ?

Open in App
Solution

The given reaction is:

Zn + 2HCl → ZnCl2 + H2

1 mole of Zn reacts with 2 moles of HCl to produce 1 mole of H2

0.3 mole of Zn will react with 0.6 mole of HCl but there is only 0.52 mole of HCl.

So, HCl is limiting reagent.

2 Moles of HCl reacts with 1 mole of Zn

0.52 mole of HCl reacts with (1/2)*0.52 = 0.26 mole of Zn

1 mole of Zn reacts to form 1 mole of H2

Thus, 0.26 mole of Zn reacts to from 0.26 mole of H2
