Question

Parcels from sender S receiver R pass sequentially through two post-offices. Each post-office has a probability 15 of losing an incoming parcel, independently of all other parcels. Given that a parcel is lost, the probability that it was lost by the second post-office is .
  1. 0.444

Solution

The correct option is A 0.444
Let E1:Parcel lost at Post Office - 1
Then P(E1)=15

E2:Parcel lost at Post Office - 2
Then P(E2)=P(¯E1)P(E2)=45×15=425
A: Parcel lost

Then P(A)=P(E1E2)=P(E1)+P(E2)

(as E1, E2 are mutually exclusive)

=15+425=925

Required Probability = P(Lost by 2nd/Parcel is lost)

=P(E2/A)=P(E2A)P(A)=P(E2)P(A)

=4/259/25=49=0.444
