The partial pressure of oxygen in the blood influence the affinity of haemoglobin for carbon dioxide this phenomenon is known as the Haldane effect. When the partial pressure of oxygen is low, hemoglobin readily binds to carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide binds amino acid moieties on the globin portions of haemoglobin to form carbaminohemoglobin ( unlike oxygen which binds to iron in haemoglobin).
