Peasants were vital for the economy of the Mughal Empire. Do you think that they are as important today? Has the gap in the income between the rich and the poor in India changed a great deal from the period of the Mughals?

Solution
1. As India is primarily an agricultural economy, peasants are as important today as they were during the Mughal Empire.
2. They cultivate the land and grow crops without which we cannot survive.
3. They pay land revenue to the government which is used in various development work. We cannot think of a sound economy without them.
4. They are the backbone of the country.
However, the divide between the rich and poor remains the same. The poor peasants still don't have the resources to use modern methods of agriculture and good quality seeds. Agriculture generates a seasonal income and thus people remain seasonally unemployed.
