Solution
Introduction
Peat is an organic substance consisting of material formed by the partial decomposition of organic matter (plant material in wetlands).
The acidic and anaerobic conditions that exist in the water logged condition help in peat formation.
Sphagnum moss is the main producer of peat. This moss is seen in standing water (lakes or margins of slow flowing rivers) or under consistently high rainfall (upland or mountain regions).
Formation of Peat
Peat is formed by the incomplete decomposition of the remains of plants growing in waterlogged conditions.
The partially decomposed plant remains accumulate and become compacted, forming peat.
Uses
Peat is used in the following ways:-
Fuel- An important source of domestic fuel in several countries, especially in Europe and America.
In agriculture - Peat is also used in agriculture to improve soil fertility.
Water purifier - This is also used as a water purifier in septic tanks.
