People living in hilly region suffer from simple goiter. Explain?

Solution

Goiter:

  1. It is caused by the deficiency of iodine in the diet.
  2. Lack of iodine in diet causes simple goiter which results in the enlargement of the thyroid gland.

People of hilly areas are more prone to goiter:

  1. Iodine is not synthesized in the body and needs to be supplemented through food and water.
  2. It is most common in the hilly areas because hilly areas are far away from the sea hence the soil or drinking water contains less amount of iodine.
  3. Conditions that increase ATP demand- a cold environment and high altitude trigger the negative feedback regulation of thyroid hormone secretion.
