Let the number of fruit trees is $x$ and the number of nonfruit trees is $y .$

According to the given condition,
$y = 2 + 3 x$

If, $y = 77$ then,
$77 = 2 + 3 x$
$\Rightarrow 3 x = 75$
$\Rightarrow x = 25$

The number of fruit trees planted is $25.$
