People tell that if a person swimming in river, sea, or pool swallow water they will start drowning. Is it true? If yes then how?

As long as you know swimming you will not drown in any waterbody. Swallowing water will not cause drowning. However if you don't know to swim, you will not be able to stand in water if the depth of the water body is higher than your height and you will end up drowning.
