Question

Perform an experiment to show that particles in matter are constantly in motion.

Solution

Experiments that provide the most definitive evidence for the motion of particles in matter are Brownian Motion and diffusion.

1.The Brownian motion refers to small particles suspended in liquids moving randomly. It is also known as Brownian movement.

2.The mixing of two substances caused by particle movement is known as diffusion. This is a property of materials.

Step-1:Aim of the Experiment: Demonstration of particles moving continuously.

Step:2:Apparatus required: Beaker, water and potassium permanganate(KMnO4).

Step-3:Procedure:
Step-1:Fill a beaker with 100ml of water.
Step-2:Add 5 grams of KMnO4 crystals to water slowly.
Step-3:Observe the results.

Step-4:Observations: In this experiment, both the potassium permanganate crystal (KMnO4) and the water are made up of tiny particles. A potassium permanganate particle (KMnO4) is purple in color, whereas water is colourless. With the addition of KMnO4 to water, we observe a gradual change in the color of the water to purple. It is due to the particles of KMnO4 getting into the inter-particle spaces between the molecules of water that make the entire water look purple.

Step-5:Conclusion: As a result of this activity, we concluded that particles of matter are continuously moving.
